Open Question: Why do you think the Beatles are overrated?

This question is directed at people who aren't ignorant tweens that just follow the crowd. If you think the Beatles are overrated, why? And if so, are you familiar with at least half (approx. 150) of their songs, or their history? Personally, I can't understand how anybody who knows anything about music can think so. Please shed some light on this for me. THE FOLLOWING HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE QUESTION AND YOU CAN SKIP READING IT IF YOU SO DESIRE: Here are a few things that we wouldn't have today if not for the Beatles: -Music videos: Yes, the Beatles invented the music video. The first ones ever made and shown on television were "Paperback Writer" and "Rain", in 1965. -Live Aid/charity concerts: George Harrison came up with the idea of a concert that donates all the profits to charity, with the Concert for Bangladesh in 1971. -The Rolling Stones: I don't know if you're a fan of THEM or not, but it's worthwhile to note that the Beatles wrote and gave them their first hit, "I Wanna Be Your Man" -Long hair: The Beatles were the first men to grow out their hair and have side-swept bangs. They inspired musicians and the public after them, up until this day. Today's typical long hair of rockers and emo hair wouldn't be around if not for the Beatles. They made it acceptable for men to have long hair, though they were constantly criticized and made fun of for it. -Musicians that talk about politics and religion: The Beatles were the first to ever initiate conversations with reporters about topics other than music and style. They made an uproar when the Beatles spoke about the war in Vietnam, and John made a comment about Jesus. John returned his MBE (a very prestigious award from the Queen) to the Queen in protest of British support of America in the war. John also used his publicity to spread the message of peace, by chosing to make his honeymoon a public bed-in for peace. Etc, etc... -The British Invasion: An obvious one. Do you like any bands that come from Great Britain? I bet you do, or know plenty of people who do. I'm sure you also know at least one anglophile... Before the Beatles, the only musicians to make it in America were Americans. The Fab Four opened up the door to other countries by opening up American minds to the possibility that there might be something good somewhere else. -Worldwide satellite television broadcasts of concerts: The first time a satellite was used to broadcast something around the world, it was the Beatles' live performance of "All You Need Is Love" -Intentional feedback: The Beatles were the first to intentionally use the sound of feedback in music, in "I Feel Fine". They also came up with the idea of reversing a recording, such as the backwards vocals at the end of "Rain", the backwards guitar solo in "I'm Only Sleeping", and many other things in "Tomorrow Never Knows". Everybody does it nowadays, and you probably don't even notice it. -Bass playing: It is no overstatement to say that Paul McCartney re-invented the way the bass guitar is played. He was the first to ever write/play a melody line on the bass guitar, and had the most intricate and interesting bass parts you will find to this day. Before then, the bass was just another instrument to keep the beat, playing nothing more complicated than quarter notes or four notes per song. -Clothes designed and sold by musicians: The Beatles opened up their own store, the Apple Boutique, in London. Brands like J.Lo wouldn't exist without such a precedent. -Apple computers: Granted, the computers would probably still exist, but they would not be called "Apple" or have that logo. The Apple Computers people got that name from the Beatles' company, "Apple Corps", and openly admit this. -Michael Jackson: He would not be as rich, and therefore wouldn't have as much money for Neverland and plastic surgery(among other things), and therefore wouldn't be as famous as he is, if not for the Beatles. In 1985, he bought the rights to the Beatles' catalog, which has brought him millions and millions and millions of dollars since. -Classical musicians in rock bands: The Beatles were the first popular group to incorporate strings and brass into their music, but still keeping it rock. Before that, rock couldn't have instruments other than guitars and drums. -Stadium concerts: Chances are, at least half of the real concerts you've been to took place in some sort of sports arena. The Beatles were the first group to need a large enough space to perform at a baseball stadium, and had the only (ever) sold out concert at Shea Stadium on August 15, 1965. -The option of buying left-handed guitars: Paul McCartney had to play a right-handed bass/guitar upside down. Left-handed guitars were rare and hard to find, until Paul made it okay for musicians to be left-handed. -Integrated concerts in the South: Though I can't give the Beatles credit for the Civil War :P ... The Beatles refused to play at a sold-out concert in Jacksonville I guess this was too long and got cut off: -Integrated concerts in the South: Though I can't give the Beatles credit for the Civil War :P ... The Beatles refused to play at a sold-out concert in Jacksonville, Florida, because the audience was to be segregated by race. They wouldn't play until the audience was integrated.

Open Question: Is this talent ... or nothing special =/?

I play the piano. Not the right way, I can't really read or write well. I've always "tampered" with the piano or played around with it but it wasn't until I 3 years ago it's like my brain went into hard drive and I could hear a song on the radio and play it key for key, I started creating my own songs. Here are the songs I learned in the past year, radiohead-sail to the moon, no surprises, we suck young blood, jigsaw falling into place, fake plastic tree's, air bag, knives out, karma police muse- falling away with you, starlight, map of the problematique, sing for absolution coldplay-gravity, yellow, in my place, lost, viva la vida, the scientist, trouble, amsterdam, don't panic, for you, fix you, swallowed in the sea, til kingdom come clair de lune, beethovens 9th(working on these) the killers- 4 songs from sams town Sara Bareilles-love song Camera Obscura-Lloyd, I'm ready to be heart broken Okkervil River - A girl in port, Maine Island Lovers all just on piano in tune by ear no sheet music! I was thinking of majoring in music, I asked some of my teachers why I had took to piano they said my ears were trained well probably b/c I listened to music all the time. Like when I hear a song on the radio I easily pick it up and can play it on piano, alot of time I replace the lyrics with the piano singing the words instead if that makes any sense. I feel so stupid though b/c all the good people can read and they play classical I just no matter what always go to my yearning to play radio music. Kinda sucks b/c all the good schools only want someone who plays and reads classicals :( so what do you all think?

Open Question: Need some realtionship advice ?

Hi everyone thanks for helping before hand! I have been dating my Girlfriend for 8 months. I cant Speak for her but I can at least say I like her as a person more than any girl i've ever experienced or have been attracted to. I've had these feeling since the first night we meet and they keep getting stronger. We are both very attractive people, have never had a fight - not one, both atheist - which is hard to find and is important in the way we live our life and carry out our ethics. We hang out all the time, gone on trips, just got back from xmas with my family, into art, politics, working out ect, ect. Prior to us meeting we were hell bent on staying single and "free" forever. The issue is not our relationship - i think that its excellent but this is for the both of us our first relationship. Out side of prior dates and us both sleeping around a bit at one point, this is all we have to go off of but it just seems to good. Is this what every relationship is like when you find someone that's compatible? At times i feel like im taking our relationship too serious and feel like im missing out of other potential great relationships with women...... but I also know i'm not really compatible - relationship wise (i have tried), with many women for anything more than a one night stand (i'm attractive and in great shape but to into classical music, wine, art. law and political policy - which bores women ) and to feel anyway close to the way i feel about her is a tall order since i have felt this way about her from day one, and find her eternally attractive. Because of our sick sense humor, world view and passionate interest in art and politics/law - which may sound interesting but, when it comes down to it most people are just saying that stuff to sound interesting and after a date i could tell.. Most women and men really are not that deep or passionate about anything and, many people look down on you for not being religious also. Another issue is that i'm going to law school and while she potentially may come with me at the same time she's thinking of moving to europe. While I would love to do that I need to finish law school. Basically from experience would you stay together no matter what as long as its going great? Or are we just enthralled that this is our first real relationships? does a relationship like this happen more once you get in the groove of having a realtionship/s ? For the more experienced people, in hindsight did you make the right decision when having to move to a new job, school ect ect, or wish you should have stayed with your first love cause you never ended up finding better. I guess my worst fear is ending a relationship on such good terms because of conflicting futures; issues which upon graduation we will have to deal with.

Resolved Question: am i GOOD or an amuture at.....?

music? okay, so ive been playing piano for about 2-ish years now (im 15 now, and i started around 12) and i started playing the electric (plug in) piano in my home and didnt stop. the bad thing is, i dont mind for the reading of it, and do most of my work visually. i started a while ago by listening to the piano more. i started by doing the kind of full version of munneut (spelling?) by bach and canon by pachelbel. there not the full key versions because the dumb music book that came with the piano only gives songs in amuture style or something. i then started doing a few other songs that are simple like scarborer fair, im still doing that now. a while back, i understood how to visually play songs on a floppy disk that came with the piano that was more for pros and i learned like 1/5 of clare du lune in its true form, but then the floppy broke, so i dont know how to do the rest. when i started, i also started playing around with fingering. soooooo, i created my own liitle classical pieces. i have created about 10 pieces of work over the time i started and people are surprised i made up music without anyone teaching me. i also taught myself everything i know. i also taught myself how to play by sound, like Nearer my God to Thee, and a spanish lullaby, and some others. now, am i a over acheaver or a kind of person who teaches theirselves to do things? (ive taught myself how to play piano, draw, cook, and sew) i dont care at all about the career of music but i just would like to play for the enjoyment of playing. im sorry if the grammer was terrible, but i was really tired, but thanks to reply, you!

Open Question: I've got a question about the piece "Greensleeves"...kind of long, especially for people who know music theory?

Okay, I actually have two questions. My sister and I are playing a violin and piano duet out of a Mannheim Steamroller Christmas book for violin and piano. The piece we're playing, Greensleeves, is in G minor, but they don't put in a key signature, well, I guess they put it in C, then they just write in all the B flats and E flats, as well as the accidentals. But the piece is obviously in G minor. They don't do this for any of the other pieces in the book, and they're not meant to be really easy arrangements for beginners. Is there a musical reason for this? Just wondering... haha. Ok, my other question is about the song itself, not the version we're playing. So, Greensleeves goes like this, right? If we're in the key of G minor... G Bflat C D Eflat D C A F G A Bflat G G F G A F D .... etc. Sorry I couldn't write note values, but if you're familiar with the song hopefully you'll know what I'm talking about. Okay, so I'm pretty sure that at some point I've heard at least one recording, or heard it played another way...where they E flat I typed above is replaced by an E natural. Is this another way to play it, or am I just crazy? And if it is, would this be like playing it in the G dorian mode? That would be dorian...right? Or is it just an accidental they put in because they thought it would sound cool... this is assuming that some people actually do play it this way. If you read all this and answer...wow... thanks so much! I just wonder about these sorts of things a lot. I would ask my piano teacher but she's sick and I don't have a lesson for a while.

Resolved Question: Classical music and Yiruma ?

I am really hoping I run into one of you top contributors that answers in this classical section. I was reading a question earlier about a girl asking about beautiful music that's like A river flows in you, and I have to say, I'm quite awe shocked by you peoples response to her question. First the lot of you started saying just because she doesn't like YOUR boring taste of music she doesn't like classical music. Now , from the sounds of it, I would guess you people are middle aged to old men telling people that if they don't like your horrible taste in music they are childish or ignorant of music in some way or the other. Then I proceeded to hear some of you call her a child because of her question. The only children are the people like you old fossils. Does her age disqualify her from perceiving something as beautiful? If so , the same arguement applies to you: maybe you're to old to know what beautiful is. It was doubly insulting to me considering I found Yiruma's works beautiful and great pieces of music myself. The thing I think some of you people seemed to forget is the fact that music is about listening and enjoying; not about how many layers it contains and complexity. I've tasted a variety of Classical songs, and though I enjoy Mozart, I like Kiss the Rain and a river flows in you a lot more then anything Mozart put out. Let that stick slide out your arses Old men. It's a Piano the same as Beethoven and Mozart : it's classical. The whole point of me saying all that is to show how silly it is. They didn't ask a question to get schooled on what genre it is. It isn't pop that's for sure. There may be different genres of Rock, but in the end it is all rock. That's all i was saying And they sing in those songs Miss. Not a good example.

Open Question: Are these chord associations correct?

Diatonic chords often can portray certain emotions and feelings. Here is my idea of the chords. I - Tonic: the ending chord of a song, also the chord that completes a verse and gives the feeling of the music being "at rest" ii - Supertonic: a traveling chord; often moves the other chords along iii - Mediant: another traveling chord; creates a sense of deep emotion and carries a lonely sound; it may also suggest a contemplative sound. It is not common in Classical music, but it indeed has a place in ballads and R&B because of its contemplative sound. This chord is more suited for those genres than any other. Usually leads us to IV or vi. IV - Subdominant: the second strongest chord (next to the dominant); this chord is ideal for basic everyday progressions, such as I, IV, V. Carries a passionate sound. V - Dominant: the strongest chord; everything always leads up to it, then resolves down to the I chord. This chord is what helps to establish the key of a piece of music. Defines the tonic. This is the end-all beat-all chord. This is the "bulk" chord. vi - Submediant: another emotional chord, but only this time unlike the iii chord, this one is the saddest chord. It is the relative minor of the I chord. A majestic feeling can be created by raising the middle note of the chord, making it a major chord. (Example in C major: F---> G----> Em----> A) In the example from a song in C major, the vi chord is changed from Am to A (major). The transition from the Em chord to the A major chord creates a majestic feeling. viiº - Leading tone: this is a piercing chord; its main purpose is to resolve to the I chord, just like the V chord does. It is merely a reflection of V. It also can move to the vi chord. There isn't very much use of it in genres outside of Classical. Is this true?

Open Question: OH man I am so sick of people and their cliches!?

Well, this is the problem. I started with piano 3 years ago. I never did a grade (are grades really that important? i can work for a jazz orchestra even if I don't have grades) and focused mostly on popular music (salsa in my case, I am a latino-french mix) and jazz (my favorite style). People tend to think that I am not serious because I don't focus on dazzling and impressive songs. I prefer to work on several things and divide my practice: comping, improvisation, ear training, theory, jazz standard-based repertoire, etc. By the way, I am now teacherless. But even teacherless I have learned a lot of things: Coltrane Changes, composition, piano in a jazz orchestra, ear training (using computer programs), etc... My ex-teacher visited a few months ago and told me that he was amazed because I had progressed in spite of being teacherless. I also learned to play the chromatic harmonica and the electric bass (on my own). I am now working with a guitar teacher. I am sick of people's cliches saying that I am not a real pianist because I started "late" (12yo) and classical is not my thing (I CAN play it, but is not my passion, get it?). And there are a lot of "FORMAL PIANISTS" out there, with a lot of repertoire but 0% ear and 0% theory (i know what i am talking about, i live in latin america) that are way much admired that i am (only other musicians can understand me, general public doesn't understand me). So far piano has been my principal instrument. I am also good at bass. What do you think I should do? In the country in which I live, most of the piano teachers only want to teach classical music in the "traditional style" (read your music sheet and shut up). Most of them don't know anything about how to apply theory, ear training, improvisation, composition, etc... I can read a lot of things and play a lot of things, so I don't need a PIANO teacher, I need a JAZZ teacher. Ok?

Open Question: What is this song? "I'm a superman" ?

Hey, I heard this song last night on a video, searched the lyrics but can't find anything. The song is jammin', it's sick. It's got kind of a classical melody with a boomin' beat. The lyrics I make out are - I'm a superman, I'm a I'ma superman. I'm a superman, I'm a I'ma superman. I'm a superman super duper super man. Better known as the superman man. I white girl, you know I Lois Lane. I got my x ray vision on you little. I see right through do a fucking thing. I'm still sky high, you can see it in my eyes. Gucci belt, I am still fly. I drive by in that '08 Lex Luther. Purple Haze. I'm the whole DVD you the bonus footage. I get the bricks moving faster than the speeding bullet. I'm still super strong, I'm still super fast. I'm a superman man, I'm getting super papers. I'm in that supercharge fast breaking LA Lakers. X Ray vision I can see right through a hater. I'm bitch tonight, she's suckin' dick tonight. She got me feelin' weak, so here I call her kyrptonite. I'm in the air, snare, now your homies. This my year, hotter than electric chair. I'm a superman, I'm a I'm a superman. I'm a superman, I'm a I'm a superman. I'm a superman super duper super man. I'm a superman, I count super cash. I got a super pretty bitch, she got a stupid ass. In thet '08 911 niggas zoomin' past. On the E-Way got the fuckin' State Troopers mad. - And then that's where you video cuts off the music. If you want to hear it yourself go to - http://video.stepchildsnowboards.com/flash/player/index.php?vendor_id=359&video_id=8473 - wait a little for it to load and skip to 10:40. Thanks! You know, I don't really even need the name of the song. Maybe if you recognized who raps it, I could find it from there! Peace. Wow, all of those answers suck. "Why don't you google it?" - I did, Copernicus. "Game - Superman", apparently you don't know you fuckin' rap. That's not the song at all.

Open Question: I'm a loser looking for a girlfriend...?

Okay, so I've been looking lately for a gf irl. I have a few girlfriends on World of Warcraft, but I can't get enough exp for a gf irl. I play WoW all day almost every day and I really think I'm kind of nerdy. I am really jealous of the gangster kids at my school and around my area because they always have a bunch of girls around them. I don't really talk to any girls at my school, and I'm kind of an outcast because I listen to classical music and write stories about mythical creatures. How do I dress to impress girls. Right now, I have big thick black glasses that I think make me feel sexy. I weigh about 210 lbs and I have a best friend named lazireth8736 that I met last month who has recently joined my guild. He is someone who I can trust completely. I enjoy going to Star Trek conventions and meeting William Shatner or other star trek junkies such as myself. I really want to land a date with a girl at my school, but they really don't even glance at me. I wouldn't care who they were or what they looked like, I just want to be considered a cool kid because I took a girl to a movie. I'm so jealous of the kids at school that have kissed or held hands with a girl, I just want to be loved like them. (I am literally almost in tears because of thinking about this) I really just want some help and information on how to change or hang out with a girl. It would mean more to me than anything and I could really use some advice. Thank you all so much and I'm looking forward to your information. bai. I also don't like black girls. They always seem so bitchy and get on my nerves. It's not funny. Try to live your life in my shoes. You don't understand what it's like to be a loser and unaccepted. I would give up WoW to treat a girl like a princess. well, black girls always make fun of me for being a loser and I just haven't met a nice one. I'm not racist, I just don't fit in with a lot of different groups. I am in the chess club at my school though. Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
This is me...am I attractive? I'm very insecure about my weight so I lied. I only weigh about 125 lbs, so I lied to make myself sound bigger because I think that's small. This is a new link to my picture, since the first one didn't work. http://img367.imageshack.us/my.php?image=yahooanswerspictureet1.jpg hopefully it works.

Resolved Question: how do i get my music on a iphone or computer to sound better?

ok so i have a iphone 3g and i mac minni. i am looking to find out how to improve my music and audio quality. i know how to use the itunes equilizer but i know there are better things out there because it kindof sucks. so dont tell me to use the equilizer. also i mainly listen to alternative like matt pond pa and death cab for cutie. i also listen to folk... not like hippi stuff but jack johnson mainly. tons of jack johnson i listen to him almost every day. i also isten to a bit of light rock.. how can i improve the sound quality for that type of music without using the equilizer. i also want good settings for classical music. also dont say get good headphones cuz i allready have a nice pair of skullcandy and akg.. along with my new sehneisers. also i am about to buy the softwear call hear that i know can help me with this but untill then i dont want to download much stuff and i dont want anything to complicated. if you do not know the answer to this question pleas dont aswer!!! i dont want something stupid like google it or buy this for 300 dollars. i also want my music players to sound good if i play other music like techo or hard rock or something cuz ocasionaly i do listen to other music. so i dont want jack johnson to sound amazing and everything else sucky. also if i use the equilizer is there a way i can set it to be different on each of my playlists. i have a wide range of music that depends on my mood. is there a way to enhance all of this. someone told me to make my music files a different format that will take up more room but makes it sound better. how do i do this! and how much room will it take! right now i only have about 900 songs on my iphone and i have about 1 gb of space left to use. my iphone was jailbroken but there where not to many features for music like i had hoped so i restored it. if there is some music enhancing app that i did not see then i will re jailbreak it. also i have 2 shuffles. i herd that music sounds better out of the bottom part of my iphone than the actual headset plug. is there an adaptor so i can use the bottom 30 plate plug. is it cheep and where can i buy these things. please if you know how to anwer this pleas do i will give you a esay 10 points. once again i do not apreciate stupid answers. :) i do aprecitate people that will gladly answer my question. remeber there are no stupid questions there are just stupid people. like me

Open Question: The World's Best Orchestras?

A recent poll of music critics in Europe and North America asked for recommendations for a league table of the world's best orchestras. The result is below. While I abhore this sort of meaningless comparison, I thought it might be interesting to get others' opinions on who they thought might be missing from the list and who is on the list that they wouldn't include. It was also interesting that not a single chamber or period-instrument orchestra was mentioned - even though there are many stunningly good ones. Shame on the critics for completely ignoring them! 1. Concertgebouw Orchestra, Amsterdam 2. Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra 3. Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra 4. London Symphony Orchestra 5. Chicago Symphony Orchestra 6. Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra 7. Cleveland Orchestra 8. Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra 9. Budapest Festival Orchestra 10. Dresden Staatskapelle 11. Boston Symphony Orchestra 12. New York Philharmonic Orchestra 13. San Francisco Symphony Orchestra 14. Mariinsky (Kirov) Theatre Orchestra 15. Russian National Orchestra 16. St Petersburg Phillharmonic 17. Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra 18. Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, New York 19. Saito Kinen Symphony Orchestra, Japan 20. Czech Philharmonic Orchestra On my part, some glaring omissions (although I would never try to put them in order!) include: Australian Chamber Orchestra BBC Symphony Orchestra European Union Youth Orchestra Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (there isn't a single orchestra from the southern heimisphere in the list) Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (London) Philharmonia Orchestra (London) Royal Danish Orchestra, Copenhagen St Paul Chamber Orchestra Swedish Chamber Orchestra Tonhalle Orchestra, Zurich Toronto Symphony Orchestra Incidentally, Y!A's prompt as to which category this question should be posted was "Food and Drink: Beer, wine and spirits" Wow! some swift responses. I feel I can now add some of my views on those additions some of you have suggested: The English Chamber Orchestra - actually created to be a recording orchestra (as was the Philharmonia, actually) is possibly the best-known chamber orchestra on the planet. However, as a 'live' ensemble they are less impressive - somewhast boring to my biased ears. I concur with those that mentioned the revitalised Hallé. Mark Elder was undervalued for too many years, I have to say. I'm still not sure if they should be on a list of the 'top 20' in the world. And should they be there in preference to, say, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra? I agree that there are too many American orchestras for a world list, although I too am surprised to see the LA Phil and San Francisco orchestras on the list instead of the still fabulous Philadelphians. I would add Montreal to my original list (perhaps in preference to Toronto). Stefan K is right to put in a bid for the Simón Bolivar Youth Orchestra in Venezuela - especially if one considers what the value of the orchestra is within that country (or continent) as a whole. It knocks the socks off most others on the list in that respect. I would say that neither the London Philharmonic nor the Royal Philharmonic are currently in the world top 20 (not even among the best in the UK!). The Royal Scottish National Orchestra would outplay them any day. And Malcolm, I should have included the Scottish Chamber Orchestra - they are one of the best in the world of ANY kind. However, I have to take issue with Malcolm's Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. Oh dear, of dear. One of the dangers of playing without a conductor is that 1) you have to play 'safe' and 2) you play like a committee. I find the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra one of the dullest orchestras I have ever heard. They can even make Prokofiev's Classical Symphony sound boring! I'll be back later ...

Open Question: Do any of these work?

Tried and True Tips and Tricks *Drink water! This is the #1 rule for both ana and mia. It fills you up when you are hungry and makes purging easier. The general rule is also that hot water fills you up more and ice cold water helps you to burn more calories since it lowers your body temperature so your body has to work harder to stay warm. *Chew sugar free gum or mints constantly. I am never without one or the other in my mouth. The benefits are endless: it kills cravings, keeps your mouth full so you can't binge, burns calories by chewing, peppermint flavors suppress appetites, and prevents bad breath if you are in ketosis. *Tea of Coffee are an Ana’s best friend. Drink with NO CREAM OR MILK and artificial sweetener ONLY. Tea is especially great because it comes in so many different flavors and is calorie free, as opposed to black coffee which has an albeit small amount. The caffeine is also great for raising metabolism. *Cut food into tiny pieces. Put your fork down between bites. Chew everything a certain number of times. Eat in patterns. Develop systems of eating. All of this helps to make food a mere object rather than the devil itself. *Take a sip of water or other calorie-free liquid between each bite. You feel full much faster, partially because the body often mistakes thirst for hunger, so by drinking, one actually reduces the amount of food their body needs to eat. *If you are really craving something specific and are on the verge of a binge, go into the kitchen, prepare it, and then eat it-but do not swallow! Chew it slowly, enjoy it, and then spit it out. Immediately after that rinse your mouth with water at least three times before swallowing a sip so you do not accidentally ingest any calories. *If you are about to binge, pick a safe food, preferably negative calorie (pickles, celery, blueberries, etc.) and eat it non- stop for up to half an hour, taking a sip of water with each bite. Often you will not be able to even get up to half an hour, and you will be full so the desire to binge will be gone, but you haven't eaten anything "bad." *No Sugar Added, Fat-Free Fudge Pops. These are the reason I am alive. They have 40 calories in one and taste exactly like chocolate ice cream. If you must binge, try eating a whole box of these. There are 560 calories in a box of 14, and they are easy to purge. *Do not ever eat anything you do not know the exact amount of calories in. Sometimes you can fool yourself into thinking you've eaten less than you have. Remember, numbers do not lie. *Track progress by measurements and not the scale alone. Scales are affected by everything from the weather to the time of day, but the numbers on a measuring tape are affected by nothing except the actual size of your body. *Keep a food diary. Start your own pro-ana page. Make an ed scrapbook. Anything that keeps your mind on not eating is a good thing. *When you want to eat, exercise for at least 15 minutes first. I like to put on nice lyrical music, usually Charlotte Martin or sometimes classical, and do bare work. It not only distracts you from eating but burns calories and benefits your body as well. *Buy a pair of expensive jeans at least one size too small. Try them on right before you eat. You will either not want to eat or will eat less. When you lose enough weight to fit into them properly, reward yourself by buying another pair, again one or two sizes too small. *Eat low-calorie foods with very intense flavors. Often times you just crave taste. Chili peppers, anything pickled, peppermints, and very concentrated bullion (make it with half the water recommended) are all good options. *Make a list of foods that you are absolutely never ever allowed to eat. Write it down and keep it somewhere accessible. On this list should be things like doughnuts, cake, cream, soda, fatty meats like duck, and any dairy product not made with skim milk. If you really like any of these things and find it hard to resist, prepare it, but then put something disgusting all over it (like pouring vinegar on a cream-filled doughnut). Take a bite. You will find you have totally lost your taste for the food. *Diet pills are amazing, but you have to be careful. Try to eat something small and safe when you take one, like an apple or a small piece of grilled chicken. If you don't then you will get awful side effects. The same goes for taking more than the recommended amount. I have taken four stacker 3 pills with no food and almost ended up dead because of it. Use, but with caution. *If you must go out to eat, go to the restaurant’s web page before hand, and find something safe to eat. Do not eat bread or appetizers. Order a salad with dressing on the side if everyone else is having appetizers. If there is nothing safe on the menu most places will make you a plain piece of grilled chicken or fish if you ask. *Never drink soda. There

Open Question: Who in your opinion is a true DIVA?

Okay, I think a DIVDA is someone who has a long history of successful hits and albums, who has kept herself strong and beautiful for years, who has not been broken by the press, who has been a good role model and an addition to this world. I want to say Madonna... but Madonna has fallen in my eyes since the Hard Candy. She was a DIVA in Ray of Light, but now days, she's just too "slutty" and too "desperate" to keep the DIVA name. I want to say Celine Dion, but she's been stock in a circle since My heart will go on... She's not reinventing herself and music is too country as of late. So, after considering many, many more, I have came to a conclusion, that in my opinion, a true DIVA, who actually deserves to bare such name is.... SARAH BRIGHTMAN!!!!! She has been in music industry for 30 years! She has reinvented her image from each album, but not only that, she has songs that are oprah, rock, pop, new age, world, classical, etc... She's one of the rare singers who has a variety of styles compiled into one voice. She's just amazing!!!! Check out these videos on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9Z6WoKIyx4&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDRGtK8z0Ik&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDQ_v0LiysA and this, guys, please, this is my all time favorite song by Sarah Brightman, please listen to it and lemme know what you think: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLozn2HTeng oh my god, Beyonce is too young to be called Diva. She doesn't have 30 years of music industry behind her back! Christina is out of the question in my opinion. She's trying too hard to be Mereline Monroe with her cow face. Tina Turner is not in the picture anymore just like Sher, they're both gone... So Sarah Brightman wins so far! okay, so Christina and Briteny, Beoncey and Miriah Carry, I don't even care to misspell their names because they haven't been around for that long to inherit the name of DIVA. A Diva is not one with a bitchy attitude and huge numbers of albums sold, she's the one who is original, creative, innovative, strong, beautiful, and has a few decades of years spent.... I don't think we can call Britany Spears that, because she's not strong, and she's not beautiful, and she has not been kind in her music... Sex in every song is not a kind of image a true Diva would choose! Sarah Brightman is VERY popular, especially in Europe, Asia and Latin America. If USA is too busy listening to Briteny Spears to ignore her, doesn't mean she's not popular!!!! By the way, she has tours throughout USA with millions of tickets sold!

Open Question: Spiritually speaking why do people still deny ancient egypt was black ?

god. Just because they belived in numerous gods dosen't mean anything this was before the Lord let everyone know he wanted to be known as the lord. Egypt was a black civilization any other statement is nothing but a Eurocentric lie. Don’t give me that a mummy was found with red hair myth it has been debunked (http://www.archaeology.org/interactive/hierakonpolis/field/hair.html ) This genetically proved Egypt was black and it was done by white anthropologist (http://wysinger.homestead.com/African_Archaeological_Revie__June_2005_.pdf ) Does Imhotep look like a white or Arab to you http://www.iqb.es/historiamedicina/personas/bpics/imhotep.jpg ? . Linguistic Unity With Southern and Western Africa In a detailed study of languages, Diop clearly demonstrates that Ancient Egyptian, modern Coptic of Egypt and Walaf of West Africa are related, with the latter two having their origin in the former. Testimony of Classical Greek and Roman Authors Virtually all of the early Latin eyewitnesses described the Ancient Egyptians as Black skinned with wooly hair. Ancient Egyptians were indeed Black Africans. Archaeologists have discovered, by examining their cranial structure, that they were a mixture of what we would today consider Black and Arab. Now their was some whites in Egypt but, , this was the result of thousands of years of foreign occupation. Which unfortunately is used to dispel facts regarding the original Afican Nubian Foundations of EGYPT COMPLETE Pharaoh ( notice the unmistaken African features http://users.cyberone.com.au/myers/diop12-13.jpg Egypt aside, Africa has had many empires, songhay, mali timbuktu, etc.africa was colonized by Europeans and had it's wealth and natural resources stolen repeatedly THIS IS THE BEST PICTURE THAT PROVES BLACK EGYPT http://images.easyart.com/i/prints/rw/en_easyart/lg/3/0/Head-of-Amenophis-III-from-the-tomb-of-Onsou-Egyptian-Art-302583.jpg How can you deny that ? ^^^ Medicine Mummification Masonry Gothic Architecture Ship Building Law Religion Culture Music Writting Fermentation of fruits and vegitables. Agriculture Art....and the list goes on and on! The roots of "Western" civilization, culture, science, technology and religion are to be found not in Greece, but in Black Egypt and Nubia-Kush. From as early as 10,000 B.C. to 1500 A.D., Blacks were in the forefront in the development of science, culture and technology. Black empires and civilizations from the prehistoric Zingh Empire of 15,000 B.C. of Mauritania to ancient Khemet (Egypt) and Nubia-Kush, which existed about 17,000 years ago, experimented in various aspects of science and technology. Some of these sciences and technologies were so advanced that stories of flying machines and the invention of advanced machines has been passed down through ancient writings. Later Black civilizations such as Khemet and Mali experimented and created various sciences and technologies such as the chemical and mystery sciences of ancient Khemet and the surgical sciences of Mali, in West Africa. As early as about 400 B.C., a Black Pharaoh named Pi Di Amen built a model glider to conduct experiments in flight. Centuries before, the Black Egyptians had already invented gunpowder for use in their temples and mystery schools. The mathematical and astronomical sciences necessary for high technologies such as those used in space technology and industries were first began by Blacks in Khem (Egypt) and Kush (Sudan). These sciences and high technologies were then passed on to the Sumerians, Babylonians, Elamites (all originally Black civilization), Greeks, Hebrews, Romans and Arabs In fact, it was the Black Sabeans of South Arabia, members of the Kushitic branch of the Black African race who established the first civilization in the Arabian Peninsula...thousands of years before the emergence of the Bedouin Arabs Black medicinal sciences began in Khemet (ancient Black Egypt) and led to later Greek medicinal sciences. These ancient African sciences were copied by the Greeks and others from the ancient Papyrus texts composed by the ancient Khemites and Nubians. They introduced Black Moorish science, technology, civilization and education to Europe and raised the Europeans from the Dark Ages of about 400 A.D. to 711 A.D. The Black Moors introduced advanced learning to Spain, similar to what had been taking place in Ghana, and at the university city of Jenne in Mali for hundreds of years. They introduced advanced learning to the cities of Toledo, Seville and Cordoba. These cities became centers of Black Moorish and European scholarship, science and culture, where Europeans and others learned new and advanced sciences, arts and technologies. That led to the European Renaissance of later years. The Black Moors introduced art, architecture, sciences, medicines, animal hu

Resolved Question: Why is classical music so hard to listen to?

You can't listen to it on the bus or in the metro due to the extremities of loud and soft which are always present in classical music. You end up just hearing the loud parts DA NA NA NA wtf just happened? You can't listen to it at night (if you live in an apartment/flat) without constantly adjusting the volume on your speakers due to the aforementioned LOUD/soft ever present aspects. When you're driving home from a night of mayhem with your friends and want to unwind you switch to classical fm only to hear whines that THIS MUSIC IS DEPRESSING PUT BACK THE ELECTRO You can't afford to buy it since each cd costs around 40 to 50 bucks (Of...course.. I don't have over 100 gb of classical music on my hard drive from torrents (shifty eyes)) And finally a little statistic with no relevance whatsoever to the topic in question...courtesy of Youtube.com Britney Spears - Womanizer (Director's Cut) Views: 30,213,127 Gustav Mahler - Adagietto (from Symphony N°5) 11,048 views THIS WAS A JOKE! I am obsessed with Chopin. He is my favorite composer. So I've already listened to all his etudes. I know Alkan's Barbaro, it is very catchy but I doubt it is as hard to play as people say it is after listening to Liszt's transcendental etudes or Godowsky's variations on Chopin etudes. Yes, I've listened to that Toccata by Prokofiev. I'll admit I haven't delved much into Prokofiev yet besides his 2nd and 3rd piano concerto and some of his other symphonic works And finally I want to add that I used the word classical in a colloquial sense as everyone seems to do on these forums. I spend most of my days in the romantic era. Derek I also listen to Jazz a lot. Oscar Peterson and Art Tatum are my favorite jazz pianists.

Open Question: Help! Xmas gift for 20yo boyfriend?

Hey, everyone! I've been dating my boyfriend for the past three years but this Christmas I just can't figure out what to get him...so here are some parameters I have set in place to help you give me the great suggestions I know you all have!! :-) 1) My total budget for gifts is between $100-120. Our anniversary was just a couple of months ago, so I don't want to spend a whole lot more than this. We never discuss what we spend on each other, but I would estimate it's usually around $100. 2) Please don't offer "sex" as an option. 3) We're both in college together in the Midwest. He's going into engineering and loves to ski (he has enough ski stuff, though, and it's not my area of expertise...). He loves to read, usually fantasy or thrillers, but good "guy" books would work, too. I usually have trouble finding him something he hasn't read, so any suggestions would be well received! 4) His family is far more wealthy than mine, so I usually have difficulty finding the appropriate gift because he usually already has it! That being said, I want to give him something he'll find interesting without breaking my bank. He would never expect or want me to drop a ton on him, but I want to get him something nice that he'll appreciate. 5) I usually get him one smaller, less expensive gift for fun and then one gift is more expensive and more...special--the main event, so to speak. 6) He owns a Zune (vs. an iPod...he detests my Mac) and favors the PC line of things. 7) He's not a techie, but he loves building things--think engineering, chemistry, physics, and LEGOS. Mythbusters, Top Chef, and Scrubs are his favorite shows. 8) As far as his music taste goes, it varies. He likes classic rock, classical music, and jazz. Past gifts: Watch Swiss Army knife Quilt (My mom and I made it...it was fun and good for his dorm room) Cool framed art Magazine Subscription (Scientific American...his family gets Pop Sci) Contemporary Lamp (I should've bought one for myself) Various cds or movies we've seen together Shirts/sweaters We bought a Wii together this summer, and so far we only have Mario Party 8 and the Wii Sports one. His family has WiiFit, and although I think that would be fun, I don't think it'd be a very original or special xmas gift. But if you have any game suggestions, I'll take them. So far I've ordered him a Monty Python boxed set for roughly $40, but I don't want that to be the "main" gift. It's more for fun b/c I personally don't care for MP....he does though. ;-) The only ideas I have (and this sounds lame...) but I know he hates the pillow he has at school, so I was thinking of getting him a nicer pillow like the one I have, the 2 in 1 kind with a fluffy side and a thick padded side. But that doesn't seem v. exciting. He also only offered me the suggestion of books. So I clearly need your help! Think about the men in your life, or if you are a man, think about what you would want materially (*ahem*) for Christmas. Thanks for your advice! I really appreciate it.

Open Question: i need a sad violin song ?

for my senior project i'm learning to play the violin. i have until the end of arpil to learn and i plan on practicing for anywhere from 9 to 12 hours a week. yes, i'm serious. i've already completed two 3 hour practice sessions. i'm not afraid to practice like a pro because for all those hours of practice, the chances of my one day playing like a pro are looking pretty bad. very bad. the other practices were a bit shorter but my busy season just ended. i need a song to perform in front of the judges. i would like it to be a sad or even romantic song, preferably classical, but it doesn't have to be. i will also need to know where to get this sheet music. free would be awesome of course! i got the violin for a hundred bucks, the cheapest violin teacher anywhere, i'm on a roll! but if it's copyrighted then please tell me where to get it. i would prefer to get it at a music store.my mom doesn't like buying things online and i don't have a credit card. please remember, i am a beginner and while i have a few months to practice, it looks like my musical talent is strictly limited to the piano. : ( the song needs to sound impressive, but be playable. i've always wanted to play the violin. i must've been crazy. i still love the way it sounds and maybe if i find a good enough song to motivate me, i won't end up destroying my instrument in a sleep walk of rage and hopelessness so please help me out!

Open Question: My mom says that I make her sad cause i'm not like other girls?

I was just telling her that I visited a 200 year old house today and she snapped at me and said that she didnt care and wsihed to an earthquake would ruin the house. She said that she wants me to be like other girls, that i should care more about fashion, buy new clothes more often. She's really upset with me now and tells me to be quiet when i say something and says that shes dissapointed. Shes ashamed to be seen with me in public if im just wearing a t-shirt with jeans, she wants me to wear more makeup and talks about shit like marriage. She thinks thats all there is, that you should find a man and get married, im never going to get married but she keeps talking about crao like that all the time, like i have no self respect. I should be doing stuff that makes me feel good, not for a man. Shes annoying too, shes 46 years old but dresses like a teenager, im the one who should be ashmaed to be seen with her in public, but i dont really care cause shes my mother. She flips out if i buy cds with my own money, Im allowed to buy 1 album every 2 months if i have been good. What the hell is wrong with her? I am 20 years old and i pay her alot of money every month cause i cant find my own place. I really want to move out as soon as possible. I really dont want to have any contact with her or my cousins with my aunt who lives nesxt door. They question everything i do and talk behind my back. Im a very nostalgic person, i love history, older music (beatles, led zeppelin, 20s-40s music, classical, patti smith etc) movies, books from the 1800s, everything, vintage clothes. Thats what they think is funny and my mom is ashamed about. I would be happy if my daughter had her own personality and wasnt a robot like everyone else. My cousins are really selfish people, they dont care about their mother, they only talk when they have dinner. they spend all their money on ugly clothes thats in right now, they only care about fashion and makeup, thats all they talk about and trash about other people. She wants me to be like that? They are all selfish idiots, no one gives a crap about my feelings. What do you guys think i should do? Everytime i bring this up to my mother, and tell her how i fell, she thinks i should grow up, and i dont want to be treated like a child when im 20 years old, i really would move out if there were any appartments available, but its really hard in this town. I feel like im suffocating in this home, cause there is more but i dont have time to write more about this.

Open Question: I'm a freshman in high school. I want to major in Music. help!?

Hello. I'm a fresh(wo)man in high school. I play electric guitar and classical/jazz piano. I love classical, jazz, rock, and metal music. My dream has been to have a metal band, but everyone dreams of that, don't they? I've played piano for 7 years, and guitar for 1 year, but I'm pretty good on the guitar (for only a year of learning) since I practice a lot and started out as self taught. I want to major in Music, and I don't know where to start with anything. I want to go to music college right out of high school. What should I be focusing on? I am trying to advance my improvization skills on the guitar and memorization skills on the piano. I'm also trying to compose some of my own stuff. I want to stay on the west coast. I'm not sure what aspect(s) of Music I want to major in. I am thinking Music Therapy or Recording. I would love to perform, but I'm not sure if I'd be good enough. I also have wanted to be a therapist for awhile, since i'm good at talking with people and I would love to help people emotionally, so that's why I'm thinking music therapy is my path. Does anyone major in music therapy? I want to start preparing now, since i know music colleges are competitive. What skills do I need for music therapy, and to be a good hire-able musician? i want to be hire-able as a side job. I need some guidance! Is there anywhere I can learn more about music therapy? I'm browsing through the wikipedia article now.

Open Question: Musicians! How to analyze this circle of fifths progression? First good answer gets 10 points...! Please help?

I'm analyzing Dvorak's Sonatina for Violin in G Major, Op. 100 Movement 1 (Allegro Risoluto). And I'm completely thrown for a loop because I don't know how to analyze some of this stuff, specifically this one excerpt (measures 98-111, mostly). This is essentially what that excerpt looks like (I left out some rhythms and stuff but this is all the chord-tone notes that are there): http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e316/bfroggy326/dvorak2.jpg (The piece starts in G major so the key signature was 1 sharp, that's why it only has 1 sharp there even though I've analyzed it starting with B major.) Basically I've analyzed most of it using letter names for the chords. I need to somehow convert this into a roman numeral analysis. I don't know if it modulates to a different key or what, but the goal is definitely to move back to the home key of the piece (G major) which it does at the very end of the circle-of-fifths thing. I'm just confused because I would think that, for example, that first e minor chord would be a iv, but since we're in B major a iv doesn't exist. Is it just a borrowed chord and I should analyze it as a iv anyway, or is it some kind of secondary chord or what??? If anyone could help me convert these letters into roman numerals it would be greatly appreciated! Thank you so much! Ohh, okay. Thanks! I got the analyzing done through measure 103 but once I get to the "g, C, F, bflat, Eb7, Ab, Ab7", I'm not sure what to do. What key do I analyze these in??? Wait, disregard what I just asked. Would it be right if I just put measures 104-105 in F major, and call the chords (g C F) ii - V - I ? And then put measures 106-108 in Db major, and call the bflat a ii/V, the Eb7 a V7/V, then the Ab a V (and the Ab42 a V7)? Then switch to G major?

Resolved Question: What is your opinion on this non-metal, classical new age band?

Okay, Okay. I actually don't know the genre but it's not metal. I had to put that it was non metal in the title so that other listeners would come too :P But Ashram is an Italian band that does instrumentals and have some songs with voices but they're all really pretty and I like them alot. I had them favorited on my Youtube and I don't ever remember finding them O_O 'tis fate I guess. I believe this band is more like Classical/New Age music Here is one of their instrumentals... II Mostro - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8fa7wSgfdk&feature=related Here is one with the vocals - Forgive Me - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKClTwNUFb4&feature=related and another one...I've Lost Myself - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s3wy2h0lyW0&feature=related I would appreciate if you would listen to one instrumental and one of the songs with the vocals at least. So that you can have more to judge on :) the lyrics for the song I've Lost Myself are right here since it is quite hard to understand the lyrics. Dreaming of my pain / way I'm like a rose on a thorn bush And I stay in the shade The desert can kill me Dreaming of my pain / way I'm like a rose on a thorn bush And I stay in the shade The desert can kill me And I forget your name As I've lost myself ... I feel the hole inside my soul.. Madscientist...I said the name of them is Ashram. Not Apocalyptica x_x and Ashram is not metal.
