Open Question: Help! Xmas gift for 20yo boyfriend?

Hey, everyone! I've been dating my boyfriend for the past three years but this Christmas I just can't figure out what to get him...so here are some parameters I have set in place to help you give me the great suggestions I know you all have!! :-) 1) My total budget for gifts is between $100-120. Our anniversary was just a couple of months ago, so I don't want to spend a whole lot more than this. We never discuss what we spend on each other, but I would estimate it's usually around $100. 2) Please don't offer "sex" as an option. 3) We're both in college together in the Midwest. He's going into engineering and loves to ski (he has enough ski stuff, though, and it's not my area of expertise...). He loves to read, usually fantasy or thrillers, but good "guy" books would work, too. I usually have trouble finding him something he hasn't read, so any suggestions would be well received! 4) His family is far more wealthy than mine, so I usually have difficulty finding the appropriate gift because he usually already has it! That being said, I want to give him something he'll find interesting without breaking my bank. He would never expect or want me to drop a ton on him, but I want to get him something nice that he'll appreciate. 5) I usually get him one smaller, less expensive gift for fun and then one gift is more expensive and more...special--the main event, so to speak. 6) He owns a Zune (vs. an iPod...he detests my Mac) and favors the PC line of things. 7) He's not a techie, but he loves building things--think engineering, chemistry, physics, and LEGOS. Mythbusters, Top Chef, and Scrubs are his favorite shows. 8) As far as his music taste goes, it varies. He likes classic rock, classical music, and jazz. Past gifts: Watch Swiss Army knife Quilt (My mom and I made it...it was fun and good for his dorm room) Cool framed art Magazine Subscription (Scientific American...his family gets Pop Sci) Contemporary Lamp (I should've bought one for myself) Various cds or movies we've seen together Shirts/sweaters We bought a Wii together this summer, and so far we only have Mario Party 8 and the Wii Sports one. His family has WiiFit, and although I think that would be fun, I don't think it'd be a very original or special xmas gift. But if you have any game suggestions, I'll take them. So far I've ordered him a Monty Python boxed set for roughly $40, but I don't want that to be the "main" gift. It's more for fun b/c I personally don't care for MP....he does though. ;-) The only ideas I have (and this sounds lame...) but I know he hates the pillow he has at school, so I was thinking of getting him a nicer pillow like the one I have, the 2 in 1 kind with a fluffy side and a thick padded side. But that doesn't seem v. exciting. He also only offered me the suggestion of books. So I clearly need your help! Think about the men in your life, or if you are a man, think about what you would want materially (*ahem*) for Christmas. Thanks for your advice! I really appreciate it.

Open Question: Why is classical music so hard to listen to?

You can't listen to it on the bus or in the metro due to the extremities of loud and soft which are always present in classical music. You end up just hearing the loud parts DA NA NA NA wtf just happened? You can't listen to it at night (if you live in an apartment/flat) without constantly adjusting the volume on your speakers due to the aforementioned LOUD/soft ever present aspects. When you're driving home from a night of mayhem with your friends and want to unwind you switch to classical fm only to hear whines that THIS MUSIC IS DEPRESSING PUT BACK THE ELECTRO You can't afford to buy it since each cd costs around 40 to 50 bucks (Of...course.. I don't have over 100 gb of classical music on my hard drive from torrents (shifty eyes)) And finally a little statistic with no relevance whatsoever to the topic in question...courtesy of Youtube.com Britney Spears - Womanizer (Director's Cut) Views: 30,213,127 Gustav Mahler - Adagietto (from Symphony N°5) 11,048 views THIS WAS A JOKE! I am obsessed with Chopin. He is my favorite composer. So I've already listened to all his etudes. I know Alkan's Barbaro, it is very catchy but I doubt it is as hard to play as people say it is after listening to Liszt's transcendental etudes or Godowsky's variations on Chopin etudes. Yes, I've listened to that Toccata by Prokofiev. I'll admit I haven't delved much into Prokofiev yet besides his 2nd and 3rd piano concerto and some of his other symphonic works And finally I want to add that I used the word classical in a colloquial sense as everyone seems to do on these forums. I spend most of my days in the romantic era. Derek I also listen to Jazz a lot. Oscar Peterson and Art Tatum are my favorite jazz pianists.

Open Question: i need a sad violin song ?

for my senior project i'm learning to play the violin. i have until the end of arpil to learn and i plan on practicing for anywhere from 9 to 12 hours a week. yes, i'm serious. i've already completed two 3 hour practice sessions. i'm not afraid to practice like a pro because for all those hours of practice, the chances of my one day playing like a pro are looking pretty bad. very bad. the other practices were a bit shorter but my busy season just ended. i need a song to perform in front of the judges. i would like it to be a sad or even romantic song, preferably classical, but it doesn't have to be. i will also need to know where to get this sheet music. free would be awesome of course! i got the violin for a hundred bucks, the cheapest violin teacher anywhere, i'm on a roll! but if it's copyrighted then please tell me where to get it. i would prefer to get it at a music store.my mom doesn't like buying things online and i don't have a credit card. please remember, i am a beginner and while i have a few months to practice, it looks like my musical talent is strictly limited to the piano. : ( the song needs to sound impressive, but be playable. i've always wanted to play the violin. i must've been crazy. i still love the way it sounds and maybe if i find a good enough song to motivate me, i won't end up destroying my instrument in a sleep walk of rage and hopelessness so please help me out!

Open Question: My mom says that I make her sad cause i'm not like other girls?

I was just telling her that I visited a 200 year old house today and she snapped at me and said that she didnt care and wsihed to an earthquake would ruin the house. She said that she wants me to be like other girls, that i should care more about fashion, buy new clothes more often. She's really upset with me now and tells me to be quiet when i say something and says that shes dissapointed. Shes ashamed to be seen with me in public if im just wearing a t-shirt with jeans, she wants me to wear more makeup and talks about shit like marriage. She thinks thats all there is, that you should find a man and get married, im never going to get married but she keeps talking about crao like that all the time, like i have no self respect. I should be doing stuff that makes me feel good, not for a man. Shes annoying too, shes 46 years old but dresses like a teenager, im the one who should be ashmaed to be seen with her in public, but i dont really care cause shes my mother. She flips out if i buy cds with my own money, Im allowed to buy 1 album every 2 months if i have been good. What the hell is wrong with her? I am 20 years old and i pay her alot of money every month cause i cant find my own place. I really want to move out as soon as possible. I really dont want to have any contact with her or my cousins with my aunt who lives nesxt door. They question everything i do and talk behind my back. Im a very nostalgic person, i love history, older music (beatles, led zeppelin, 20s-40s music, classical, patti smith etc) movies, books from the 1800s, everything, vintage clothes. Thats what they think is funny and my mom is ashamed about. I would be happy if my daughter had her own personality and wasnt a robot like everyone else. My cousins are really selfish people, they dont care about their mother, they only talk when they have dinner. they spend all their money on ugly clothes thats in right now, they only care about fashion and makeup, thats all they talk about and trash about other people. She wants me to be like that? They are all selfish idiots, no one gives a crap about my feelings. What do you guys think i should do? Everytime i bring this up to my mother, and tell her how i fell, she thinks i should grow up, and i dont want to be treated like a child when im 20 years old, i really would move out if there were any appartments available, but its really hard in this town. I feel like im suffocating in this home, cause there is more but i dont have time to write more about this.

Open Question: I'm a freshman in high school. I want to major in Music. help!?

Hello. I'm a fresh(wo)man in high school. I play electric guitar and classical/jazz piano. I love classical, jazz, rock, and metal music. My dream has been to have a metal band, but everyone dreams of that, don't they? I've played piano for 7 years, and guitar for 1 year, but I'm pretty good on the guitar (for only a year of learning) since I practice a lot and started out as self taught. I want to major in Music, and I don't know where to start with anything. I want to go to music college right out of high school. What should I be focusing on? I am trying to advance my improvization skills on the guitar and memorization skills on the piano. I'm also trying to compose some of my own stuff. I want to stay on the west coast. I'm not sure what aspect(s) of Music I want to major in. I am thinking Music Therapy or Recording. I would love to perform, but I'm not sure if I'd be good enough. I also have wanted to be a therapist for awhile, since i'm good at talking with people and I would love to help people emotionally, so that's why I'm thinking music therapy is my path. Does anyone major in music therapy? I want to start preparing now, since i know music colleges are competitive. What skills do I need for music therapy, and to be a good hire-able musician? i want to be hire-able as a side job. I need some guidance! Is there anywhere I can learn more about music therapy? I'm browsing through the wikipedia article now.
